Having a University degree opens up rewarding opportunities that might have otherwise been inaccessible. Yet the popular question remains – Is doing a Degree worth it? The answer varies from person to person, depending on their personal interest, career benchmarks, and lifestyle. However, from a broader perspective, the conclusion for the question remains constant. To understand why let’s take a closer look at the key benefits of doing an Undergraduate Degree.
With the cost of tuition fees constantly rising, it’s easy to wonder whether three years of university is worth it anymore. But new research concludes that yes, A University Degree indeed pays off. Statistics from the Department of Education indicate that the median annual salary for graduates over their lifetime is £34,000.
The corresponding figure for non-graduates is only £25,000. If we assume that graduates enter work at 21 and non-graduates at 18, with both retiring when they turn 65, this amounts to a lifetime earnings gap of £321,000. The same report also suggests that postgraduates earn on average £8,000 a year more than their undergraduate counterparts.
University graduates have access to 57 percent more job opportunities on average than non-graduates, and it is estimated that, by 2020, two-thirds of all jobs will require postsecondary education. A degree enables you to qualify for these additional opportunities and offers you more flexibility in where you choose to work.
Research conducted by Burning Glass Technologies indicates that of the job advertisements posted online, nearly two million require an undergraduate degree. While more than 80 percent of all job openings for workers with a bachelor’s degree or higher are advertised online, only 50 percent of jobs requiring a secondary school qualification are posted online, making it harder for these workers to connect with prospective employers.
In today’s job market, building and maintaining a professional network is critical to success. You avail yourself the opportunity to tune your thoughts into a different dimension through a different perspective. When you expose yourself to individuals from different ethnicities and backgrounds, you expand the appreciation and understanding of art, history, and philosophy. The cross-cultural experience that you gain will eventually mold you to be resourceful, adventurous, and internationally-minded. Once you complete your degree and step out into the world, degree earners can expect support and guidance from their mentors and professors that aren’t available anywhere else.
While doing an undergraduate degree is indeed a big commitment, the rewards are indeed plentiful and are unequivocally worth it. In addition to having an excellent positive return on investment, you would also have added benefit of personal developments and as well as advantages to your family.
